3 Steps to a Clean Dishwasher

Posted on April 25, 2017

We all take our appliances for granted. We only pay attention to them when there is something wrong, and they’re not performing at their best. And when it comes to cleaning appliances, most of us assume they’re always clean since their main function is to clean. But that’s not exactly correct.

For most people, the dishwasher is easily the most relied-upon cleaning machine. And that means it has to process its fair share of leftover food, grease, and soap scum. That can sometimes leave the machine looking and smelling less than pleasant. And if the machine doesn’t smell or look sanitary, imagine what that means for your dishes?

Whenever your dishwasher is emitting a smell of not-quite-right, it’s trying to tell you it’s time for a thorough cleaning. Here’s 3 easy steps to get it done:

  1. Clean the filter – Your filter accumulates a lot of gunk. As it should … that’s why it’s there! So it’s important to clean it regularly. Pull out the bottom rack, remove the filter system, and clean it with the spray on your faucet or a soft soapy sponge. When you’ve removed the food residue, put it back where it belongs.
  1. Sanitize – With so many different uses around the house, white vinegar could easily be the unsung hero of household cleaners. Place a bowl of it in the center of the bottom rack, and run the dishwasher. The dispersal of the vinegar throughout the cycle should leave your dishwasher fresh and clean.
  1. Deodorize – Now that you’re cleaned the filter and the inside of the machine, you want to make sure you remove any traces of foul odor. Sprinkle a cup of baking soda in the bottom of your dishwasher, and let it sit overnight. In the morning, run an empty cycle. When the cycle’s done, you’ll have a fresh-smelling, squeaky-clean dishwasher.

There’s no better modern convenience for a busy family than the dishwasher, which is why it’s so important to keep it in tiptop shape. And now you know how. Of course if your dishwasher’s issues are more involved than an offensive odor, give us a call at 866.6RAIDER, or visit us at www.raiderrooter.com to schedule an appointment.
